On Sunday, July 10, Llandybie Tennis Club travelled to Glyneath.

The team for the day was Matthew Bowden and ex-Gwendraeth Valley rugby legend Aled Morgan, and making up the other pair was another club father-son combination of captain Mathew and debutant, 13-year-old Jacob Davies.

The pairing of Bowden and Morgan played a great first rubber with the pair working well together, and Bowden’s serve hitting over 150mph, which helped Aled have some easy pickings over the net.

Bowden was not done with just his serve going well, as his return was just as good and with Morgan’s eagerness to chase every single ball down (even in the heat). They were very unlucky to lose 6-4 6-2.

The heat probably got to the pair in their second rubber as there was a lot of confusion during and after the game what the score was but confirmed score was 6-2 6-1.

Up next it was a very proud moment for father and son duo Mathew and Jacob Davies. Any early butterflies in Jacob soon turned to dragons as his serving game was spot on all day and with him not hitting a double fault all day.

It was just a shame that Davies senior was not on his net game, otherwise the first rubber would have been closer for the pair losing out 6-2 6-2.

The second rubber was a tricky affair as one of the opposite pair had a very tricky left-hand slice serve, this posed no problems at all for Jacob as his forehand was causing the more experienced server huge amount of grief.

Jacob was in no mood to just ‘get the ball in.’ Instead, he was all guns blazing, one particular mid-court forehand drive volley winning them a game. A very close match which saw the Llandybie pair lose 6-3 6-1.
