Ammanford were surprised on arriving at Crymych to find that unfortunately the home team had to start with 14 men as they had an issue with lack of props. This situation was not new for Ammanford as they were in this predicament themselves for the first three games of the season.

Although down to 14, Crymych were full of hard running and tackling. The start was ok for the visitors with a successful 45metre Sam Potter penalty within the first couple of minutes. Crymych’s energy earned a couple of penalties which they kicked into the corner, a clean take at the line was moved into midfield and after several phases they managed to cross the line.

Ammanford pressed hard down the slope for much of the half but failed to cross the home line, their defensive work was excellent. Sion Williams and Marco Dallavalle led the way with several strong carries. Ammanford’s only reward was a second Potter penalty.

The second half started like the first, but it was Crymych that slotted the 45metre penalty opening up a 10-6 lead. Crymych did not look at all phased having to play with 14 men, however, as time went on Ammanford’s pressure led to some desperate defence which led to a couple of yellow cards meaning they were down to 12 men. Ammanford took full advantage scoring a couple of tries. The first came from a midfield scrum on the home 22, Ammanford moved the ball left and using the extra men put wing Elis Lewis over in the corner. The second try scored by centre Kai Richards was converted by Potter giving Ammanford a 10 – 18 lead.

Crymych, back to 14, charged down the slope but resolute defence kept them out. Prop Sion Williams robbed Crymych of the ball on his own 22, it was quickly moved wide to flying wing Lewis, only a last gasp tap tackle stopped him, but he managed to offload to Potter who was supporting on the inside. He showed the defence a clean pair of heels scooting the 40m to the line and converted his own try making it 10-25.

With 20 minutes to go the Ammanford’s travelling supporters were looking forward to the bonus point try but this was not what in the Crymych play book. Their relentless hard ball carrying led by skipper and No8, Carwyn Phillips, finally cracked the home defence and some fine goal kicking ment that with only three minutes to go Crymych had scored two tries, and the successful kicks made it a one-point game.

There was a great deal of relief shown by players and supporters when the referee blew the final whistle. This hard-earned victory takes the boys into the International break and a chance to recover before a tough journey to Brecon.

Final score: Crymych 24 – 25 Ammanford.
