Division Two West Central
Cwmgors 13 Aberavon Quins 13
Cwmgors fixture Secretary Jeff Bright expressed his happiness with a fine draw for his side made all the more notable as the Cherries had to battle back from a 13-0 deficit against the fourth-placed Quins.
Aberavon had the better of the opening half, and Cwmgors soon conceded a converted try.
Two further penalties saw the Cherries fall further behind, but they finally got on the scoreboard just before half-time with a neat Steff Rees dropped-goal.
Turning around 13-3 behind, Rees further reduced the arrears with a second penalty to give Cwmgors a hint of a bonus point at the very least.
And, with number eight Darryll Hills giving a man of the match performance, they did far better as the game wore on.
Several half-openings went a begging due to a few careless knock-ons from the hosts and some solid defensive work from Quins.
But with Ethan Price covering every blade of the Maerdy pitch grass, and scrum-half Caron Jones playing well, Cwmgors got themselves a real foothold.
And they claimed their just rewards with some five minutes remaining.
After kicking a penalty to touch, Cwm gathered the lineout.
The catch-and-drive paid dividends as replacement hooker Carwyn Williams was steamrollered over by his pack for a corner try.
Cwm still trailed by two points, but Steff Rees gave his side some Christmas cheer with a brilliant conversion from the far touchline to grab a deserved draw.
Cwmgors’ next fixture is at Neath Athletic on Saturday, January 3.
