Division Two West

Amman United 13 Felinfoel 14

Amman United managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as they went down by a single point under a torrential downpour.

Amman seemed in total control early in the second half when leading 13-0 following a brace of tries, but their Achilles Heel again proved their undoing once again as a flurry of second-half yellow cards cost them dear with the Reds reduced to 13 men at one stage.

The downpours made handling difficult, but both sides tried to play an expansive game.

Dean Williams, Gavin Lewis and Joel Foster with good early runs put the home side on the front foot, but Foel dominated up front where Amman were experiencing unusual scrummaging problems.

The hosts Amman went wide on the half-hour, releasing flyer Williams in midfield and his superb wing run, evading a last-gasp tackle took him over in the corner.

Rhys Williams missed the conversion, but added a penalty just before half-time.

Amman tackled well and scrum-half Foster put in some strong hits while Sean Mangan, surely in the forefront of the Player of the Season candidates, gave his usual reliable all round display.

Permit full-back Steff Phillips also did well with Andrew Lacey adding his usual high input.

Hooker Doug Jenkins’ superb tackle averted a possible try-scoring move as Felinfoel upped their game, but, playing down the slope, Amman got the rumble on and Mangan was rewarded for his display, crashing over from a rolling maul.

Things began to unravel from then on however as centre Johnny Bevan got sin-binned for a late-tackle.

Foel again notched up the pressure and after two close-in scrums, got the shove on. The official awarded them a penalty-try.

Things then turned niggly, and - after a minor fracas - Amman lost two players to yellow when both props - Liam Mangan and Matthew Wrigley – were sent from the field simultaneously.

The visitors took full advantage and used their pack superiority to grab a pushover try.

The simplest of conversions edged the visitors into the lead for the first time.

Amman withdrew long-serving Karl Worsfold near the end with the club stalwart set to retire at the end of the current campaign and take on a youth coaching role next season.

United got a chance to pinch the lead back, but Adrian Thomas missed a kickable penalty with five minutes left.

Amman are set to finish their league programme last on Tuesday at home to Maesteg Quins.
