Swalec Bowl – Round Four
Burry Port 28 Cwmgors 31
A much-strengthened Division Six West Burry Port side took in-form Cwmgors all the way, before the Cherries finally came through an excellent and entertaining Swalec Bowl fourth round tie.
Both sides exchanged early penalties, with outside-half Steff Rees on the mark for Gors. The home side edged ahead with a second penalty, before the visitors fashioned the opening converted score of the game as the forwards combined before number eight Richard Gregg finished off the pushover try . Rees converted and soon added a further penalty.
A converted Burry Port try on 35 minutes levelled the scores at 13-13, before taking the lead with a second converted touchdown.
A Rees penalty reduced the Cwm arrears to 20-16 at half-time.
Port continued their momentum after the break and scored a lovely try, but Rees kept his side in the hunt with a further three points, before an excellent ding-dong match turned again.
A neat rolling maul resulted in replacement hooker Cerith Dennard crashing over for another converted try for Gors. A superb long-range drop goal gave Port further impetus, but with some seven minutes left, the killer try arrived.
The referee played good advantage after a penalty infringement, and Andrew Davies finished off well in the corner.
There were still chances for Burry Port to snatch it and they crafted a promising break, but Cwmgors’ defence stood firm with prop James Varney giving a man of the match performance while fellow prop Rhodri Rees deserved special mention, travelling from Oxford to put in an excellent performance, before travelling back for a nightshift.
Cwmgors will be in Division Four South West action on Saturday when they host Pontardawe.
