THERE are plans to honour a landmark in the Towy Valley with a blue plaque.

The Cyngyhordy Viaduct could be receiving a blue plaque if plans for listed building consent are approved.

Heulwen Jones representing Llanfair-ar-y-Bryn Community Council, submitted an application for listed building consent to allow a blue plaque to be placed on the viaduct.

The viaduct is a Grade II* listed structure as a stone railway viaduct of outstanding landscape value according to the heritage impact assessment.

It was built by Henry Robertson in 1867/68 as a 1,000 feet long narrow viaduct of a height of 109 feet, with 18 arches and has careful detailing with extreme attenuation of the piers and a subtle curve in the plan.

The heritage impact assessment says the iconic viaduct was recently named as one of the five most underrated in the world.

The Heart of Wales railway line passes over the viaduct.
