Our readers have been recalling what they miss most about life in years gone by in Ammanford.

The South Wales Guardian asked our Facebook followers: “What did you used to be able to do in Ammanford but not anymore?”

Many nostalgically described how Ammanford has changed over the decades, and what they missed about the ‘good old days.’

Several residents described the weekly markets held on a Friday in the town.

Chris Watts said one thing he used to be able to do was “push through the crowds of people on Friday’s market day.”

Denise Jenkins added: “The massive market on a Friday night that people would come from all over to buy things. I miss those days.”

Many commented on the difference between Ammanford then and now, and looked back (as some might guess!) at many of the town’s old pubs and bars.

Julia Bell said she used to drink in the Telegraph and Wyn Nia mentioned Rumours Wine Bar, with the "lethal steps down to the toilet.”

Pam Harris described The Bard "when Berni and Phil Tench had it – best pub in Ammanford,” while Maria Morgan used to “go to the disco at the back of the Welfare on a Saturday night.”

As well as the places where people used to eat and drink, they also remembered the places they used to shop.

Clare Lewis thought back to “Woolworths on a Saturday for pick and mix,” while Anthea James Nicholls remembered shopping in Kwik Save.

Heather Powell looked back on several of the old shops, such as “Woolworths, Lantern and Central Café, also Bonnemarche.”

Meanwhile Claire Addey looked back on another old favourite: “Bazaar! I can still smell the shop, they had everything there.”
