Gwaun cae Gurwen library is introducing longer opening times to encourage more children after school.

The library has reopened for safe browsing on Wednesdays from 10am until 4pm and Saturday mornings from 10am until 12 noon.

The library's Whitsun half term activities saw the welcome return of the children to the library with Lot’s of Tots and Busy Rascal groups.

Parents joined in with a children's hour with an 'under the sea' theme.

Library co-ordinator Lucy Harrison said: "We continue to hold weekly zoom events, and in the last week we’ve had Amser Canu, Caffi Cymraeg and one of some special sessions for the 16 and over library members looking at improving CV’s, employability and interview techniques which was fun and enjoyed by our lovely teenagers.

"We also continue to hold our monthly 'Novels @ Night' Zoom session and this month we welcomed a special visit from local author, GCG’s very own Jane Burnard. We were privileged to be told about her exciting new children’s novel 'The Thirty-Third Owl' which has just been published."

The Thirty-third Owl is a fantasy-adventure, middle-grade title for children aged 9–11s. It takes place in Wales, and features two children who are best friends – Rose and Ianto.

They find themselves thrown into perilous adventures, where some dark, indestructible force is set on destroying them. Together, with the help of Ianto’s great uncle – a local farmer – and his dog Del, they set out on a dangerous quest to fight this malevolent being and bring the curse to an end. In doing so they must all be brave and ingenious. The story introduces the importance of the Welsh language, and it draws on one or two Welsh legends too. My aim in writing it was to show English-speaking children the richness and wonder of Wales.

The book is available to purchase at www.gwales.com

The library volunteers are currently planning a Summer Reading Challenge, which will see a mix of safe outdoor events and zoom link ups with authors, storytellers, scavenger hunts and lots more. More news on this will follow in the coming weeks.
