THESE are just some of the stories making the headlines in the South Wales Guardian in the week ending Thursday, April 21, 1983.

PEOPLE power prevailed in Llandovery this week after Dinefwr Council opted against moving the local mart to a new site. The council did have plans to move Llandovery Mart to council owned land at Danycrug. However, Dinefwr Council have opted against the move because farmers unions, mart auctioneers, the town council and local residents favoured the original site.

DINEFWR Council has agreed to conduct a feasibility study looking into the possibility of introducing a synthetic-ski slope into the Amman Valley. Cllr Roy Harris suggested the idea of a ski-slope at Gelliwerdd Park, Glanaman. He said: "With the valley's high unemployment and the demise of manufacturing industries we must look towards newer types of industry to bring prosperity into the area, we must look towards tourism."

THERE are moves afoot to get the water in Llandovery's Market Square fountain flowing again. Llandovery Town Council wrote a letter to Dinefwr Council expressing their concern that the fountain has not been operational for some time. However, Dinefwr Council will not make any final decision over the future of the fountain until a report into the costs is brought before the environmental committee.

MORE than 600 school children flocked to Tregib Swimming Pool during the Easter Holidays to take advantage of the free pool paid for by Llandeilo Police. Last week, the Dyfed Powys Police life saving team gave a display on life saving techniques. Among those watching the display was Cllr F R Jones, who provided all the children with a free glass of squash after their swim.
