An Ammanford-born actress will run the London Marathon in memory of two young girls who died from cancer.
Tomorrow (April 21) Mared Lewis is set to complete 26.2 miles, paying tribute to both Eve Lyons and Liberty Schurer who both passed away from bone cancer in 2017.
Mared, a West End star who features in Billionaire Boy, is hoping to raise money for Liberty’s Legacy which is a charity fundraising research into Ewing sarcoma.
Mared said: “The Lyons family and their very special angel Eve Lyons, and Liberty and the legacy she has left behind, is the reason I am running the London Marathon. I want to try and help others who battle this way every day.
“Two weeks before Eve passed away, she drew a picture of a sun with the words ‘keep smiling’ written underneath, which highlights the bravery of a little girl fighting for her life. It is a reminder to us all to keep smiling and do our bit to help.”
Liberty was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma on her 13th birthday in September 2016 and died on October 11, 2017, with her mum, dad, and sister by her side.
Before being diagnosed, Liberty suffered with pain in her left leg for over 20 months before doctors found a tumour almost 20cm in length, which had burst through her bone into the surrounding tissue.
Despite going through chemotherapy and limb-salvage surgery, Liberty remained positive and her love for sport and dance continued.
However, days before the end of her treatment, a new lump was found on Liberty’s thigh and the cancer had spread throughout her body.
Head of Fundraising and Communications at the Bone Cancer Research Trust, Laura Riach added:
“We are incredibly grateful to Mared and all her wonderful supporters for their efforts. The funds raised will be put to good use to ensure that fewer patients like Eve and Liberty suffer at the hands of this cruel disease.”
Eve’s sister, Meg Lyons, will also be running the London Marathon for Liberty’s Legacy.
