Neath Port Talbot Council is asking residents for their opinions on recycling initiatives.

A range of potential measures are up for discussion.

These could ensure that the council surpasses the Welsh Government’s 70 per cent recycling target set as part of their Waste Strategy Action Plan approved in 2023.

Proposals for the consultation and progress updates will be shared with the council’s environment, regeneration and streetscene scrutiny committee at their April 19 meeting.

While Neath Port Talbot comes close to the Welsh Government recycling target with 68 per cent, not hitting the target could result in hefty fines for the council.

Cllr Scott Jones, cabinet member for streetscene, said: "In approving the waste strategy action plan last year, we made it clear we would be consulting our residents on a range of options available to us to increase the level of recycling further."

Options under consideration include encouraging residents to mix paper and cardboard in one recycling bin.

This would free up another bin for items such as kettles and toasters.

Cllr Jones said: "Measures to encourage more recycling are essential, not only for us to avoid damaging fines from the Welsh Government but also for us to have cleaner, better places to live in."

Other proposals include having three weekly black bin/black bag collections.

If approved, a small annual fee could be levied for green waste collections, making it weekly.

The formal consultation on recycling plans will begin after the scrutiny committee unveils its report.
