A local marathon runner will run 100 miles in 24 hours to raise money for cancer and mental health charities.

On May 17, Nick Landek is set to complete 100 laps around Fendord Lake in Llansamlet.

Nick is running for all men who suffer from mental health problems and his grandmother who survived cancer.

He said: “The relationship between myself and my grandmother is incredible. She has helped raise me since the age of 12 and I couldn't have gotten as far as I have without her.

“This had led me through into the navy and through many other obstacles and my own struggles through mental health. She is honestly the most beautiful person I have ever met and had in my life.”

He will begin the challenge at 2am, but this won’t be the first time Nick has run for a great cause.

Nick added: “I just completed my 50-miler around Fendord Lake about two weeks ago today. I did it in 10 hours and 47 minutes.

“There’re two charities I’m running for – a local mental health charity [Men United] in Pontardawe for men’s mental health and Macmillan Cancer Support as my grandmother came through stage 4 cancer.”

Indeed, Nick is proud to be making a positive impact on the community, especially after experiencing his own struggles in the past.

He said: “It’s just good to help people. Some people are unable to help themselves. Some people haven’t got family to help themselves and I owned up to struggling with mental health and attempted suicides before.

“So, I know what it feels like to go through certain aspects of it. Particularly blokes, we don’t talk. It’s to get those people help within the community.

“The organisation is new, we’re looking to expand, get people in with therapeutic sessions and hopefully expand further into the likes of Swansea. It’s a good feeling to have.”

Those who want to contribute to the fundraising event can choose which charity to support.

“I’d like to raise a thousand pound between both and I’ve got £500 in at the moment. I done a charity event two years ago and I raised about £1700 for the Jac Lewis Foundation in Ammanford.

“I’ve put two different links. Some people know people suffering from cancer, some people know people suffering from mental health.

"So, it gives you the choice as a personal discretion towards which one you want to help. The more funding we can raise, the more people we can help with either cancer or mental health.”
