TWO Carmarthenshire artists have one of the top 10 most popular Welsh language songs on Spotify.

Friday, February 9, is Dydd Miwsig Cymru (Welsh Language Music Day) and to celebrate, the top 10 most popular Welsh language songs on Spotify have been revealed.

The list heavily features acts originating from north Wales, but two Carmarthenshire artists have made the top 10.

In second place is Brynaman-born Dafydd Iwan with his monster hit Yma O Hyd. The track was originally released in 1983 and has seen a revival in recent years, regularly used in relation to the Wales national football team. It comes in with 2,715,450 listens up to February 5, 2024. The song includes patriotic lyrics and symbolises the ongoing struggle for language preservation.

It falls behind Alffa’s Gwenwyn which clinched the top spot with 3,668,415 listens as of February 5, 2024.

In fifth place on the top 10 list is Carmarthen rock band Adwaith’s single Fel I Fod with 1,080,113 listens up to the same date.

Elsewhere in the list, Simon Gardner’s version of classic song Sospan Fach is in 12th place. Dafydd Iwan also pops up a number of times in the list including Carlo coming in in 19th place and Can Yr Ysgol in 31st place.

Adwaith also pop up again with Sudd in 51st place and Lan Y Môr in 56th place.

Transport For Wales is behind Dydd Miwsig Cymru and analysed the Spotify data to find the top 10 songs. Lowri Joyce, the company’s Welsh language strategy lead, said: “Dydd Miwsig Cymru is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the richness and diversity of Welsh language music, something that is at the heart of what we do at Transport for Wales.

“Welsh language music is crucial for preserving cultural identity, fostering a sense of community, and celebrating Wales’ rich heritage. It serves as a medium for storytelling, expressing emotions, and connecting people across generations. Through its diverse genres and styles, creating and listening to Welsh language music keeps traditions alive while inspiring creativity and pride. Plus, by adding a few of the favourites to our own playlist it offers a different way to enjoy your commute!”

Dydd Miwsig Cymru celebrates Welsh language music and culture and serves as a platform to showcase the rich diversity and talent in the Welsh music scene.
