FOSTER carers from across Neath Port Talbot were recognised for their work at a special appreciation event recently.

The event was held at Glynclydach Hotel in Neath Abbey and included the presentation of certificates to foster carers for their dedicated service on reaching the one year, five year, 10 year, 15 year and 20 year marks in foster caring. The awards were presented by Cllr Sian Harris, Neath Port Talbot Council’s cabinet member for children and family services.

Some of the foster carers being celebrated included Cheryl and Christopher who have been fostering for a decade. Speaking of the event and of foster caring, Cheryl said: “It’s been very nice actually, it’s nice to get together with other foster carers and social workers in a very informal and relaxed setting. However, it’s hard, and it’s non-stop but when you see the difference in the children from when they come to you and then if they leave, the difference in their confidence and abilities – it’s amazing and that alone makes it worthwhile.”

Cllr Harris said: “Each year an event is held in which we celebrate and recognise the service of members of Foster Wales Neath Port Talbot. This year, following discussions and feedback from carers it was decided to rename the award ceremony which will be known from now on as an appreciation event.

“This is to ensure that it is understood and perceived to be an event for all of our amazing foster carers and a chance for the service to thank them for all they do for children and young people in Neath Port Talbot and sometimes beyond.

“We want to recognise the invaluable contributions of our foster carers in Neath Port Talbot and wish to express heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering commitment to the children and young people in their care.”
