AN Amman Valley mental health support group has a wide range of support groups for people struggling this month.

January is one of the months of the year where more people than ever need mental health support and Shadows Depression Support Group has put together a range of support sessions which will be held at its Garnant base throughout January.

On Tuesday, January 9 and Tuesday, January 23, there will be a men’s support group. Every Wednesday in January from January 10, there will be a general mental health support group. There will also be a new violence against women, domestic abuse, sexual violence (VAWDASV) support group which will be starting on Wednesday, January 10 and held each Wednesday.

On Tuesday, January 16, there will be a suicide prevention awareness support open day from 10am to 2pm.

There will be a grief and loss support group on Thursday, January 11 and Thursday, January 25 and an anxiety support group on Thursday, January 18. There will also be a chronic pain support group on Tuesday, January 30.

There is also a suicide prevention drop in service between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

For those living in the Gwendraeth Valley, there will also be a number of support groups taking place throughout the month. On Monday, January 8, 15 and 22, there will be a Tumble mental health support group at Tumble Hall. On Thursday, January 11, 18 and 25, there will be a Trimsaran mental health support group at Trimsaran Leisure Centre and on Friday, January 12, 19 and 26, there will be a Pontyberem mental health support group at Pontyberem Memorial Hall.

Alongside this, there will be a suicide prevention awareness open day on Thursday, January 11 between 11.30am and 1.30pm and a suicide prevention drop in event on Friday, January 19 from 12midday to 2pm and a VAWDASV support group on Thursday, January 18.

Louise Craik, founder of Shadows, said: “We are trying to let as many people as possible know how to access the services and what services are free as January is usually when people need more mental health support.”
