PEOPLE walking around Llandybie will be seeing some fantastic yarn bombing displays to commemorate Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
The display was created by the Crafty Baggers Craft Club who are based just outside Llandybie in Caerbryn Hall and it also marks the first anniversary of their first display which was for Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day in 2022.
Sarah Thomas runs the group – which is an offshoot of the Llandybie and District WI – and came up with the designs which include poppies (both red and purple to remember the people and animals), figures in different colours to represent the different branches of the Armed Forces and animals to represent the animals that were used during the wars to help the war effort such as dogs, birds and horses.
There are even knitted poppies ‘planted’ along the path towards the church and a mini Lancaster bomber.
“Yarn bombing is originally an idea from America and people would go out and cover areas in the middle the night and people would find all these things across the town,” said Ms Thomas.
“I wasn’t prepared to go that far but through it would be such a nice thing for the community to make people smile.
“This display is for Remembrance and the next one will be for Christmas and then we will have a spring and Easter one.”
It takes the group months to put together their pieces, with each member contributing either in the making of the individual pieces or by providing yarn.
The Crafty Baggers group was formed during the covid lockdown with members from the WI who wanted to get involved in crafting and they knitted scrub bags for the NHS which ended up going as far as Manchester.
Anyone who wishes to join the group can do so – whether a member of the WI or not – and can bring their own craft project along. New starters are also welcome who will be given a starter kit and paired with someone who is more experienced in the crafting to help guide them.
Crafty Baggers Craft Club meets at Caerbryn Hall, Caerbryn, Llandybie on the third Tuesday of each month.
