BRYNAMMAN’S star captain put on a stellar performance to lead Wales to victory against Australia.

Jac Morgan is one of just three of Wales’ Rugby World Cup squad to start all three pool C games so far – alongside Taulupe Faletau and Louis Rees-Zammit – and he continued to put in top performances.

The 22-year-old opened his Rugby World Cup try scoring account after being a last-minute addition to the team last weekend in the Portugal game and added to it as he captained Wales to a 40-6 win against Australia.

Morgan put in a lot of tackles throughout the game as well as a number of carries, helping to get Wales on the scoreboard after just three minutes when he chose to stay out of the line out and take a place in midfield, receiving the ball and breaking through from the halfway line to the Australian 22, drawing in the last man before passing to scrum half Gareth Davies who dived over to score.

Another bit of brilliance by Morgan came after Australia shunned a kick in front of the posts to go to the corner, where the resulting line out was missed as nobody attempted to collect, allowing Morgan to pick it off at the back before kicking it downfield for a 50-22, which saw Wales win a penalty from the resulting line out.

In the second half, centre Nick Tompkins would go over for a try and Gareth Anscombe – who was an early replacement for an injured Dan Biggar shortly after he converted the opening try – would kick 23 points in the form of a conversion, drop goal and six penalties.

With three minutes left on the clock, Morgan would go over himself, dropping down over the line after a driving maul, but the conversion was missed.

After the game, Morgan said: “I’m really proud and words can’t explain how proud to put in a performance like that.

“It’s been a tough couple of months and we’ve worked really hard as a group and to put in a performance like that and get the win is massive for us.”

It means that Wales have already qualified for the quarter finals with a game left to go and look set to potentially face Argentina in Marseille in the last eight. But before that is the final group game against Georgia.

Head coach Warren Gatland said: “Today was an outstanding performance in terms of what we wanted to achieve. We were blowing a bit at half time, but I thought we went out and controlled the second half fantastically well.”
