THE hot weather came to quite an abrupt end on the weekend as thunderstorms took place across Carmarthenshire.

Sunday, September 10 saw lightning strikes hit around Llandovery in the late afternoon, and one lucky weather watcher captured what he believes to be an intra-cloud lightning storm over Ammanford that same day.

Stuart Ladd said the storm – which he filmed some of – lasted for around five minutes and called it an ‘amazing display of lightning.’

Intra-cloud lightning is the common name for lightning strikes that do not reach the ground and remain in the clouds. Sometimes, according to the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory, the cloud flashes have visible channels that extend out into the air around the storm but do not strike the ground.

Intra-cloud flashes can also be called sheet lightning if the flash is embedded within the cloud and lights up as a sheet of luminosity during the flash, which can also be seen in the video.
