IT was a tough test for Amman Valley’s Jac Morgan as he led Wales to a 32-26 win over Fiji in Bordeaux on Sunday night.

Wales’ lack of discipline throughout the game posed a challenge for the 23-year-old from Brynamman, who was regularly told by referee Matthew Carley to have a word with the players, and the penalty count continued to increase, which saw Corey Domachowski sent to the sin bin, and warnings that the next infringement would see a player go to the bin.

However, Jac successfully led the team through the nail-biting closing stages of the game, able to come out on top after Fiji’s Semi Radrada fumbled the ball in the last moments of the game, allowing Wales to hold out.

He played well at the breakdown and carried well throughout the game.

A former Hendy RFC player – Josh Adams – also played a starring role, going over for Wales’ opening try thanks to work in midfield from George North and Gareth Davies. It was a good start for Adams, who put in a strong shift both in attack and defence, who finished the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan as top try scorer.

Speaking after the game, Jac said: “I thought it was a great game. We dug in deep in that first half. Our discipline let us down at times … but full credit to Fiji, they put a lot of pressure on us with the ball in hand.

“We stuck together. Keep on coming, keep defending, work hard for each other. That’s what we did. We just had the mentality of never giving up, working hard for each other … we’ve been through a couple of hard training camps, and when the going got tough, the boys really stuck at it.”

Wales’ next game is against Portugal on Saturday, September 16 (kick off, 4pm).
