CARMARTHENSHIRE is one of the safest areas in the UK for pedestrians according to new research.

Personal injury experts Claims.co.uk looked at the latest road collision statistics for counties across the UK which were obtained from the Office For National Statistics and Carmarthenshire came in third place for the lowest percentage of road collisions involving pedestrians.

On average, there has been 316 collisions each year between 2012 and 2021 in the Carmarthenshire area, however, just 4.79 per cent of these collisions involved a pedestrian, roughly an average of 15 a year.

In 2019, just 3.31 per cent involved pedestrians, being the ‘safest’ year.

The figures slot Carmarthenshire in behind Rutland in first place with just 2.38 per cent (an average of one crash a year) of the average 56 collisions a year involving pedestrians, and Powys in second place with 3.3 per cent (or 11 a year on average) of the 303 collisions that are averaged each year in the county involving pedestrians.

A spokesperson for Claims.co.uk said: “While some areas in the UK Mag have a considerably large amount of collisions involving cars, it’s interesting to also see where the hotspots for pedestrian collisions are as well.

“It’s essential to see this information nowadays too, with many cities turning more and more walkable with time, and this list highlights potentially where work needs to be done.”

The statistics were taken from the Office for National Statistics’ department for transport statistics of reported road collisions and casualties by contributory factor and local authority, Great Britain, for the 10 years up to 2021.
