SUNDAYS are traditionally days of rest, but also have a tradition of a good old Sunday roast dinner.

Many people spend their Sunday mornings cooking the dinner for their family but what if you don’t want to cook? Well, we asked our readers where in the Ammanford and surrounding area does the best Sunday lunches and why there was a clear winner.

The overall favourite with our readers was hands down The Old Cross Inn in Ammanford. They offer eat in and takeaway options and serve food between midday and 6pm.

Col Blower said: “We had a fabulous Sunday lunch at the Old Cross. A proper home cooked dinner. Excellent choice of veg. We chose the beef with excellent Yorkshire puddings just like my mam would make. A beautiful dinner and excellent value. I would recommend it, and will definitely go again.”

Tracey Jones said she went last week and would recommend. She added: “Amazing dinner, all home cooked and fresh, proper stuffing, yorkiy and gravy like my mam did.”

Tanya Marie Howells said: “Plenty of food, great for all ages,” whilst Lee Richards said the dinner was wonderful and praised the “lovely, polite, courteous and helpful staff.”

Chloe Jex called it the ‘best Sunday roast around,’ and highlighted the fresh veg and meat and the variety on offer.

Moira Rebecca Williams said: “The best meat, nice and tender!!! Home made Yorkshire’s, roasties and roasted carrots and parsnips. Great selection of veg, new and mashed potatoes, home made stuffing and delicious gravy.”

Uncle Bob’s Smokehouse

Coming in second was Brynamman’s Uncle Bob’s Smokehouse, where there is a carvery on a Sunday between 12pm and 2.30pm. It is cooked by Adrian Duffy, who has catered for a wide range of people throughout his career including presidents and royalty.

Stephanie Hill said: “Fabulous carvery, so much food, so much choice, and the staff are lovely.”

Amy Kemp added: “Uncle Bob’s Smokehouse, best crackling ever. He told me it takes him 3 days to make. It’s out of this world!”

Blas in Ammanford was another popular location for food, with a two or three course meal on offer and a vegan option.

Morgan Shepherd said: “By far the Blas, best service and best quality food.”

The Red Lion, Llandybie

The Red Lion in Llandybie was another popular choice by our readers. They offer a home-cooked Sunday lunch and will cater for vegetarians and vegans as well as those with additional dietary needs. Dogs are also welcome in the pub according to TripAdvisor reviews.

One review on TripAdvisor stated that a group of eight and two dogs went for a Sunday lunch and said: “It was so good, we booked again for the Thursday for my wife’s 50th birthday. Food excellent and service great.”

Another said: “Lovely pub, friendly staff. Amazing Sunday Roasts. Food was lovely the roast beef melted in your mouth. Definitely would recommend the roast dinners. Very reasonable too with choices of paying for 1,2 or 3 courses (only went on Sunday so can’t say about other menu) 3 courses was £20 very good value for money.”

The Anvil Kitchen in Betws was another of the places recommended by our readers. It is a takeaway only but our readers loved it.

Faye Duncan said: “The Anvil Kitchen, Betws, take away only, but their Sunday lunch is one of the nicest we’ve had! Large portion, meat is tender, good choice of meet, variety of vegetables, stuffing and gravy is amazing! Good friendly service! Would highly recommend!”

Tashee Lou added that it is ‘by far the best in Ammanford!’
