Llandovery was featured on a BBC programme earlier this week.

BBC Wales presenter Derek Brockway’s latest Weatherman Walking episode took in the sights and history of the Tywi Valley.

The episode – which was aired on BBC One on Monday, June 12 and can be seen on demand on BBC iPlayer – sees Derek start in Llandovery and take on a seven-mile walk through woodlands and fields to Cynghordy and onto Llanwrtyd Wells via the Heart of Wales railway.

On his journey, he visited Llandovery Castle, the 12th century structure which was involved in a number of Anglo-Welsh conflicts before falling into the hands of King Henry IV in 1400 and besieged during the Owain Glyndŵr rebellion in 1403.

A permanent reminder of the rebellion at the castle comes in the form of a stainless steel monument of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan who was a local landowner and fought in support of Owain Glyndŵr before being killed.

The programme shows the number of farms dotted across the landscape and discusses the young farmers clubs as Rhian, a member of the Llandovery Young Farmers Club explaining how the clubs helps the community to come together, make new friends and try new experiences, with Derek joining them in a tug-of-war.

Derek is joined by presenter Matt Bassett who was a keen cyclist and now uses a hand cycle on his wheelchair. He finds out more about Llandovery’s plans to become Wales’ first cycle-friendly destination.

When Derek reaches Cynghordy, he jumps on the Heart of Wales railway to Llanwrtyd Wells where he takes part in the World Bog Snorkelling Championships.

Lizzie Daly, a wildlife biologist, is also featured walking through the rare Atlantic oak woodland of the RSPB Gwenffrwd-Dinas Nature Reserve in search of pied flycatchers.
