A Brynaman-born communications chief for the Welsh government has been recognised in a special honours list for her role in the late Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

Iona Wyn Turner, who now lives in Cardiff, is head of external communications, and has been handed the Member of the Royal Victorian Order.

Iona attended Amman Valley Comprehensive before gaining a degree in Economics and Politics from Aberystwyth University, and a masters degree from Cardiff University.

"I'm thrilled and proud to receive this honour," said Iona, who is the daughter of Thelma and Malvern Jones.

"It was a privilege to lead on Demise plans for the Welsh Government and to chair the delivery partner group for Wales.

"We had prepared comprehensive plans over a number of years that covered all aspects of the gun salutes, reading of the Proclamation, the King's visit to Wales for the national service of Prayer and Reflection at Llandaff Cathedral, the Motion of Condolence at the Welsh Parliament and a reception with patronages at Cardiff Castle.

"I had incredible colleagues to work with across all partners. Something of this scale cannot be delivered without an excellent group of people.

"It was an extraordinary team effort and I'm immensely proud of everyone's contribution for such a significant historic moment.”

The honours list also featured RAF flight crew who transported the Queen's coffin from Scotland to London, coffin bearers, senior managers from the household and Government, and the late Queen's stud groom Terry Pendry, who held the reins of the monarch's pony Emma as the funeral cortege entered Windsor Castle.

Awards under the RVO are in the King's gift and are bestowed independently of Downing Street to people who have served the monarch or the royal family in a personal way.

Iona has been officially handed the award for "services on the Demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II".
