LAST week, we looked at some of the region’s international players to celebrate the Six Nations.

This week, we take a look at a few more from throughout the last 142 years.

Charles Lewis

Charles Lewis was born in Llangadog on August 20, 1853. A keen sportsman, he played both rugby union and cricket and represented Oxford in hurdles and hammer throw against Cambridge.

He was educated at Llandovery College, Cathedral School in Gloucester and Jesus College in Oxford.

Throughout his rugby career he represented Llandovery College, London Welsh RFC, Rosslyn Park FC and Llandeilo.

He earned five caps as a full back for Wales between 1882 and 1884. He made his debut in a friendly against Ireland on January 28, 1882 – Wales’ second ever match – and converted two tries.

He played against England and Scotland in the Home Nations Championship the following year, converting a try against Scotland and in his final year representing Wales, played against England and Scotland again in the Home Nations Championship, this time converting a try against England.

He was captain of Wales in his first three matches. He represented Llandovery in the inaugural meeting of the Welsh Rugby Union in Neath on March 12, 1881.

He also played cricket for Carmarthenshire and Oxford University where he played five first-class matches, scored 75 runs and took 17 wickets according to Cricinfo. He went on to become schoolmaster in Llandovery, work as a solicitor and was the first president of Llandovery RFC in 1885.

He was a member of Llandovery Town Council, became an alderman and served as mayor twice. He was also appointed as a magistrate for Carmarthenshire.

Cyril Davies

Cyril Allun Havard Davies was born in Ammanford on November 21, 1936.

He played rugby in the centre and represented Wales seven times in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

He played for Wales Schools Under15 team, not losing any of the six games he played in, captaining them to three wins in 1952. He played for the Welsh Senior Schools winning two and losing once. He was also the county long jump champion.

Cyril played for Ammanford, Llanelli, Swansea and Cardiff, but his career was hampered by knee injuries. He represented Cardiff in 1960 against South Africa.

He made his debut for Cardiff in 1955, playing 39 games between then and 1962. He played four games for Swansea between the 1945/55 and 1956/57 seasons, including beating Germany 10-0. He made his Llanelli debut in April 1956.

Cyril made his debut for Wales on March 9, 1957, against Ireland. It was a 6-5 win and was a muddy game, with the Welsh being ordered off the field to change jerseys 17 minutes into the second half.

In the 1957/58 season, he played against a touring Australian team for both Llanelli and Wales. He played in the draw with England and wins against Scotland and Ireland in the 1958 Five Nations Championship.

He returned back to the national side in 1960 against South Africa after missing nine internationals.

He received a total of seven caps and made his final appearance against England on January 21, 1961.

Seven minutes into the second half of the game against England, he injured his knee and was replaced. He was selected to play for the Barbarians that year but had to pull out.

After his last appearance for Cardiff in 1962, he wound down his rugby career. He captained a Welsh Representative XV against Ammanford for their 75th anniversary in October 1962, one of six Welsh internationals in the team in a thrilling 61-40 game.

He went on to represent hometown Ammanford in the 1964/65 season, but ended his career after breaking his nose. Cyril went on to coach the club before making one final appearance in 1976, as an emergency player against Aberavon Green Stars at the age of 40.

He died on July 21, 2017, in Ammanford.

Percy Lloyd

David Percy Marmaduke Lloyd was born on January 5, 1871, in Ammanford.

He began playing rugby for his hometown club and for Pontardawe RFC before moving on to top tier Llanelli RFC.

He played for Llanelli at the age of 17 on the wing against the New Zealand Maoris on December 19, 1888, but earnt his first cap against Scotland as part of the 1890 Home Nations Championship. He plated in the next game against England and then represented Wales twice more in the 1891 Home Nations Championship against England and Ireland.

Howell Lewis

Howell lewis was born on May 24, 1888, in Ystalyfera, playing rugby for the town’s team, Cwmtwrch and Cwmllynfell before joining Swansea RFC.

He played for Swansea in the team that beat South Africa in 1912, and was capped four times for Wales.

He made his international debut against Scotland in the Five Nations Championship in 1913, playing again in the last two games of the tournament against France and Ireland. All three were Welsh wins. He played his last international in the 1914 championship in a defeat to England.

Jac Morgan

Jac Morgan, 23, from Brynamman, who went to school at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman, is a blindside flanker.

He started his rugby days at Cwmtwrch and the Scarlets Academy. He played in the Welsh Premiership for Aberavon before making his debut for the Scarlets.

He currently plays for the Ospreys, who he has been with since 2021.

In his international career, he captained Wales U18s and has represented his country at U20 level.

At the time of writing, he has played for Wales’ senior squad eight times since his debut against Scotland in the 2022 Six Nations tournament.

He has featured five time for Wales in the Six Nations and three times in the Autumn Nations series, scoring four tries.
