THE Swansea Valley could be getting a new McDonald’s restaurant.

The fast food giant is planning on opening a restaurant/drive-through on the extended site of Tesco in Pontardawe.

A planning application was submitted to Neath Port Talbot Council on February 6 by Planware Ltd, on behalf of McDonald’s Restaurants Ltd.

It proposes a McDonald’s restaurant next to the petrol station on the Tesco car park at Gwyn’s Place, Alltwen, Pontardawe.

If approved, the multi-million-pound investment by McDonald’s will see around 30 full time and 90 part time jobs created, which a supporting document in the application says will be recruited from the local area.

The 0.79 hectare site on the car park would be turned into a freestanding drive-through/restaurant, and there will be car parking, landscaping and associated works, including customer order displays and a play frame.

There will be a 76-person seating area inside the single-storey building for customers to eat in.

There will be a 31-space car park with two accessible bays and six reserve bays. There will also be provision for eight bicycles. The external play area will be on the patio.

The statement by Planware Ltd says: “The site forms an existing retail car park to the south of Pontardawe town centre. Between the site and the town centre there is a range of retail provision at the Retail Park.

“The town centre itself is not large enough to accommodate a freestanding drive-through restaurant. The proposal site forms part of an existing wider retail provision which would share a number of joint and linked trips and is considered wholly appropriate.”

Employees will conduct litter picks within a 150metre radius of the property three times a day to pick up rubbish, according to the application.

A spokesperson for McDonald's told the South Wales Guardian: “Whilst we’re still in the very early stages of the application process, we’re excited by the prospect of opening a new restaurant in Pontardawe, which would create 120 full and part-time jobs for the community.”

There are also four additional applications which relate to signage for the McDonald’s restaurant that were submitted on February 8.
