MID and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is looking for people to become on call firefighters in the Amman Valley.

Anyone who lives or works within 10 minutes of Ammanford Fire Station who is also reasonably fit and healthy is being urged to apply to serve the local community.

They are also looking for anyone who lives or works within 10 minutes of Cymmer, Glynneath, Seven Sisters or Port Talbot fire stations to become on-call firefighters.

On call firefighters get paid to respond to emergencies and are notified by a personal pager of an emergency call. They will respond to incidents including property fires, crashes, floods and rescues from heights.

Unlike full-time firefighters, the on-call ones do not staff the fire stations, with many having other jobs and an agreement from their employers that they would be allowed to leave to attend an emergency call if required.

MORE NEWS:

Other on-call firefighters include those who are available on evenings, weekends and between school runs.

The service is looking for people who:

  • Can always be relied on to be somewhere on time.
  • Committed to maintaining physical fitness.
  • Committed to maintaining and developing skills.
  • Has the sensitivity to deal with members of the public who may be distressed, confused or being obstructive.
  • Can get on with people from different backgrounds and cultures and work as part of a close-knit team.
  • Work well under pressure and able to think on their feet and solve problems.

Successful applicants will be provided with all the training and support required for responding to emergencies as well as training to deliver community safety advice that will help keep people safe in homes and communities.

There will be a salary-based pay and contribution to Firefighters Pension Scheme (Wales 2015).

Mid and West Wales Fire Service works with current employers to arrange for permission to leave should an emergency require attendance.
