CARDIGAN Town Council are seeking assurances that Ceredigion County Council have no plans to pedestrianise the High Street.

The move follows claims from the ‘We Say No To Cardigan Town Pedestrianisation Group’ that County Hall’s ‘A Strategy for Greening 6 Ceredigion Towns’ featuring Active Travel routes amounted to ‘plans to pedestrianise by stealth’.

Cllr Philippa Noble told colleagues campaigners were concerned that measures introduced during Covid lockdowns such as wider pavements would ultimately lead to a traffic-free town centre.

And she again criticised traffic diversions which had seen vehicles directed down Quay Street and along back streets as part of Covid restrictions.

“We don’t want traffic going around the houses again,” she said. “Those people living along that route did not buy their homes when all this lockdown business was happening.

“I am all for Active Travel, but I would prefer to see a safe route to St Dogmaels.

“And of course I want to see more people coming into Cardigan, but I do not think the town centre is unsafe for cyclists and motorists as it is.

“There is still a lot of doubt and uncertainty out there so we urgently need to have an assurance from Ceredigion County Council.”
