A national homelessness charity has put out an urgent call for donations in the Swansea Valley as temperatures drop.

Crisis' Swansea centre is running its Crisis and Christmas programme until December 16, as well as offering a collection service.

Events will take place across Neath Port Talbot for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The events include arts and crafts, cookery classes, and films, in addition to supporting members with their mental health and wellbeing through Christmas.

While the centre offers support year-round to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, its Crisis at Christmas work recognises that this time of year can be a particularly difficult and lonely time.

The charity says it is experiencing a particular shortage of toiletries and new clothing – especially gloves, hats, scarves and thermals.

The centre is also asking for festive hamper gifts, such as mince pies, chocolates, savoury treats, and tea and coffee which may provide some festive cheer.

Ashella Lewis, Director of Crisis Skylight South Wales, said: “We know these are incredibly tough times for everyone, and that’s why we’re so immensely grateful to anyone who can donate something this winter.

"It’s only because of the generosity and support of our donors and volunteers that we’re able to help people most in need at Christmas.

“Of course, there’s never an easy time to be homeless, but as temperatures drop and cost of living pressures increase it’s particularly difficult.

"That’s why we’re asking the public to dig deep and support people at risk or currently experiencing homelessness in Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot this Christmas.

“Here at the Skylight centre, we’re doing all we can to support people and to sort through the generous donations that we’ve already received – but, sadly, we need more.

"With the cold weather making life for people who are homeless even more devastating, we’re desperately in need of new winter clothing – particularly hats, gloves, and thermals. Any support is extremely appreciated. Thank you.”
