AN Amman Valley man recently celebrated his 100th birthday with his family and special guests.
John Evans was born in Banwen Place, Lower Brynamman, on September 24, 1922, to parents George Llewelyn Evans and Edith Jane Evans.
Known as Johnny, he is the eldest of five children and survived his brothers Ebeneser, Edgar, Elwyn and Gomer.
Throughout his life, he has been a faithful member of Siloam Baptist Chapel which he would regularly attend and spent a number of years living under the chapel with his family.
He enlisted in the Royal Corps of Signals in 1942 and served during the Second World War in Kenya, Madagascar, South Africa and Egypt.

During his working life, he worked in a number of factories and businesses in Swansea and would board with his cousin Martha Jane.
He worked at Aladdin Industries alongside brother Gomer and spent the later part of his working life at the DVLA before retiring.
Mr Evans, his brother Edgar and their mother moved back to the Banwen in the 1970s and he still lives there today with his cat Annie.
He has seen the UK governed by five monarchs and 21 prime ministers.
He celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends at a celebratory meal in The New Tredegar Arms in Upper Cwmtwrch, where he was joined by nephews Ryan, Geraint, Peter and Huw and niece Sian along with their families.
He was also visited by the mayor of Neath Port Talbot and a number of local councillors.
