AN Ammanford man is taking on 20 walks to celebrate 20 years of the town being named a Fair-Trade Town.

In July 2002, Ammanford was the first town in Wales to be given the Fair Trade Town accolade and now, two decades on, one of the founding members of the Ammanford Fair Trade Group is taking on the challenge.

Phil Broadhurst will be doing 20 Fair Trade walks and has already done a walk with the Ammanford Christian Aid Group and a walk in the Lake District with other pioneers of the Fair Trade Towns movement.

Another of his walks included travelling from Clydach to Swansea.

He said: “Annette and Dewi Hughes, who played a big part in Ammanford gaining Fair Trade Town status back in 2002 through their tireless campaigning publicising Fair Trade throughout the area, now live in Clydach, and are part of a group working towards getting Fair Trade Village status for Clydach.

“So it was both a celebration of Ammanford’s long tradition, and another step forward for Clydach’s campaign.

"It was also nice to organise an event in partnership with campaigners from a town, a village and a city, to show that whatever type or size of community you live in, you can work to make a more sustainable future.”

The walk began with a guided tour led by Annette to outlets that stocked Fair Trade products and other green initiatives in the Clydach area, including the community garden and orchard.

They then continued along the canal and cycle path before ending at the Environment Centre in Swansea.
