PUPILS at a Swansea Valley school are celebrating their GCSE results.

It is the first year that pupils have taken formal exams since 2019 due to the covid pandemic and Cwmtawe School is celebrating an excellent set of results.

A number of the pupils received incredible results including deputy head girl Beth Jones who earned 11 A* and three A grades, senior prefect Jack Powell who earned 11A* and one A grade, Evie Matthews who gained 10A* and two As and Owen Chilcott who gained 10A* and one A.

Senior prefect Evie Norris also gained 11A* and three As as well as receiving a cap for Wales as she represented the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wales in the u17 team in a match against Scotland. The team lost 3-1, with Evie scoring Wales’ goal.

Headteacher Lee Hitchings said: “I am delighted for Evie and her success in the exams is thoroughly deserved. As well as working diligently at her studies she set an excellent example as senior prefect by taking part in the life of the school and in sporting teams in the community.”

Pranaya Vaidhaya earned nine A* and four As, Darcie Priestly and Katie Richards both gained eight A* and three As, Eva Campbell gained seven A* and five As, Jacob Harris earned seven A*, one A and four Bs, Morgan Amirat gained six A* and seven As and Joshua Young gained five A* and five As.

Overall, more than eight out of ten pupils who sat the exams at the school received five A* to C grades, with two thirds achieving this in English, Maths and Science.

More than a quarter gained five or more GCSEs at the highest grade level of A* and A.

Mr Hitchings is delighted with the results. He said: “The whole school community is celebrating. These are excellent results for Cwmtawe Community School in what has been an extremely difficult two years, due to unprecedented disruption to their education.

“This has been an excellent year group – the results are thoroughly deserved, reflecting the hard work of pupils, teachers and support staff.

"I’m sure that parents will be very proud of the young people’s achievements, and we wish our students well as they go on to further education or start other careers.

“These results reflect the quality of education offered by Cwmtawe at the heart of the Swansea.”
