A community is in mourning tonight following the death of 13-year-old Kane Edwards who died whilst swimming in the River Tawe early yesterday evening (Tuesday, May 24).

Police received notification at around 5pm that a number of children had been seen swimming in the River Tawe near Morriston.

An extensive search ensued comprising police, fire, ambulance, coastguard personnel and a helicopter.

Whilst all of the children were seen emerging from the water, Kane failed to appear. He was located around 60 minutes later, but despite the efforts of the trained crew that was attending to him, he could not be resuscitated.

“Kane’s body was located in the river near Swansea Enterprise Park at around 6pm,” said detective sergeant Kristian Burt of South Wales Police.

“Sadly, despite the efforts of the emergency services, he was unable to be resuscitated. His family has been informed and are being supported at this time.”

Kane was a pupil at Morriston Comprehensive School and this afternoon headteacher Martin Franklin  said that the community had been left ‘devastated’ by the tragedy.

“Our whole school community is devastated by the news and our thoughts are with the family and friends of our pupil at this very difficult time,” he said.

“Students and staff are being offered support and we’d ask that the privacy of the school community and the pupils’ friends and family be respected.”

HM Coroner has been informed of the tragedy and an investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
