FIRE crews described how they had to fight a 'large wildfire' in Brynamman.

Crews were called to a fire that took hours to bring under control.

Extraordinary footage released by the fire service shows flames sweeping across large swathes of land on the Black Mountain.

The incident occured off Cwmgarw Road, Rhosaman on April 21.

The fire service at Amman Valley Fire Station released a statement saying they could not believe what had happened.

"Just when we thought we were past this crews were mobilised to a large wildfire that threatened roadways and properties."

"After a number of hours through the night, crews were able to bring the fire under control.

"Thanks to our colleagues in Ammanford and Abercrave for their assistance."

In March firefighters tackled a number of fires across the region, including Garnswllt, Tairgwaith and a four-hectare fire at Kilvey Hill, Swansea.

Thousands of hectares of countryside are destroyed by fire every year, which includes open spaces and wildlife habitats, and many of these fires are  preventable.
