A CALL has gone out to improve safety at a Amman Valley accident spot, after a recent crash sparked fears among those who live nearby.

Residents are calling for more safety measures on Glynmoch, Cwmaman Road, in Glanaman, saying it is only a matter of time before someone is killed.

The latest incident on October 16 saw a car crash into three garden walls, with the driver arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Dramatic pictures have captured the aftermath of the crash that saw a car flip onto its roof.

Police were called to the scene at around 10.15pm.

The driver, Benjamin Burchell, 20, of Bryn-Y-Felin, Llanelli, has been charged with driving over the limit. Officers later found the driver to be in possession of a substance believed to be class A drugs and he was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.

He was released on bail and is due to appear at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on November 11.

Reports from residents say the crash led to bricks and debris smashing through the windows of homes and caused damage to roof tiles and a car parked on a driveway.

Residents of Glynmoch have been calling for action for a number of years, but say their campaign has fallen on deaf ears.

Emyr Rees local resident and campaigner said: “Will the next accident have to be another fatal one? Maybe this time a child walking to the park or crossing the road to catch a bus to school. Why won’t our County Councillor listen to our concerned voices? Act now before it’s too late.”

Anthony Rees of Cwmamman Road added: “The speed of some motorists on this stretch of road is unacceptable and something needs to happen urgently, to slow them down with physical/construction control measures needed on the road. I don’t feel safe walking on the pavement at times. Something needs to happen immediately”

Concerns have also been raised over schoolchildren crossing the stretch of road to catch the school bus.

Jess Duncan of Glynderi, Glynmoch said: “My children have had to cross this road daily to catch the bus to school and it horrifies me when I witness the behaviour of many of the drivers who use this road. Something needs to be done urgently.”

Glanaman County Councillor David Jenkins said he “fully supports” the residents’ campaign.

He said he will continue to put pressure on the council and is calling for immediate action to be taken.

Cllr Jenkins said that he had been in discussions with members of the traffic management team at Carmarthenshire council following the recent crash.

“I have been told that the council will speak to the Go Safe and roads policing team and make further speed assessments,” he said.

Adding: “Accidents that happen in this location are by drivers who blatantly ignore the speed signs and road markings.

"I have been pressing for action for quite some time now, but following the most recent incident I urge that common-sense be applied and that positive steps be taken quickly by all agencies involved to introduce physical speed calming.

“I will continue to appeal for these measures to be taken.”
