TRADERS say more footfall is key to the success of Ammanford's indoor shopping centre.

Businesses in Shopper's World are working together to "rebuild" its image and attract more people inside.

James James who owns merchandise store Red Star 13 said that plans are underway to help remind the public that Shopper's World still exists and hopes to encourage more footfall into the Wind Street centre.

"We want to remind people that the town centre isn't just Quay Street and that we do have a lot to offer," he said.

James said that the pandemic saw his store close for 12 months but that he was more determined to make a success of it after reopening earlier this year.

He said: "All the traders I have spoken to have said that lockdown has made them more determined than ever to keep fighting to survive after lockdown.

"The difference between local traders and big high street chains is that we have the passion and commitment to bounce back from this pandemic. We have become King of the high street again."

James said that installing signs in the centre of town directing people to Shopper's World is among proposals submitted to Ammanford town council and Carmarthenshire Council.

"We are still in discussions, but we would like to see more signs in Quay Street and on Ammanford square to promote Shopper's World," he said.

James said the owner of the building has also agreed to minor upgrade works.

"We need to rebuild the image of Shopper's World and the whole of town," said James. "Ammanford should be the place where everyone meets up for a catch up. People say that there isn't enough stores for people to visit but if they called into Shopper's World they could see that there is plenty on offer to browse around and even stay for a cuppa."

Jo Clark, who runs Dirty Girties handmade soap stall said she hoped shoppers would return to town centre shopping.

"Shopper's World used to the be hub of the town," she said. "We need to get back to those times when local people supported local businesses."

Sally Ruiz runs the cafe and indoor play area. She said the traders at the indoor shopping centre were a family and that they helped each other out when times were tough.

"It's been a really difficult few months and we all want to see each other do well and come out of this pandemic stronger than before," said said.

"We have lovely shops, my cafe and the Little Bizzy Bugz, which is a lovely place for young toddlers to visit with their parents. It would be lovely to see it thriving again."

Trade stands in Shopper's World include crafts, fashion, watch and clock repairs, pet supplies, carpets and rugs, party supplies, handmade soaps and wax melts, vintage treasures, pop culture and music merchandise, with a cafe and indoor play area.

If you park in Shopper's World car park you can claim back your parking ticket fee with any purchase from one of the traders.
