PUPILS at Cwmtawe community school, Pontardawe have been congratulated on their GCSE results today.

Around three quarters of year 11 pupils achieved five or more good GCSEs including the core subjects of English, mathematics and science. In addition, over a quarter achieved five or more GCSEs at A* or A grade.

Headteacher, Lee Hitchings, said: "It has been a really difficult year due to schools across Wales closing just before the exams. Naturally, our pupils were really concerned about how this would affect their GCSEs and college places.

“However, we were reassured by the education minister’s announcement this week that all pupils would receive the grades assessed by their teachers. The pupils have missed out on so many opportunities throughout the last few months to enjoy end of year events with their friends. However, the school has endeavoured to support them wherever possible.

"These results today reflect the hard work of pupils and staff over the last five years. I am delighted that they have achieved these excellent outcomes, despite their exams being cancelled.

"I am extremely proud of the pupils - they can be rightly proud of their results and I wish them all well in the next step of their education and future careers."
