CARS have been lining up to enter lower Cwmtwrch recycling centre as it re-opened to the public today.

The queues entering the Bethel Road site reportedly caused disruption as householders were desperate to get rid of their bulky waste for the first time since the beginning of lockdown.

Ystradgynlais police said they had received reports of the queues and urged drivers to only attend the site if “absolutely necessary”.

They also asked motorists to be mindful of other road users.

Powys council reopened its household waste and recycling centres this week for essential use only.

The first two sites opened on Tuesday and Wednesday with Lower Cwmtwrch opening today (Thursday).

The recycling centre will open on Monday (9-5), closed Tuesday and Wednesday, open Thursday and Friday (9-5) and Saturday and Sunday (10-4).

The essential use is for residents who have accumulated waste which cannot be collected through the normal kerbside collection service and which cannot be stored safely at home until the lockdown restrictions are eased.

A council spokesman said: “Non-essential use puts yourself, other members of the public and our staff at risk from spreading the virus.

“Please think carefully before you decide to visit the HWRC. Non-essential use puts yourself, other members of the public and our staff at risk from spreading the virus.”
