A MEMORIAL football match has been organised in memory of a much loved local footballer from Penygroes.

Craig Bennett passed away after his battle with cancer on July 31 at the age of 37.

Craig, known to his friends and teammates as Benny, played for Caerbryn AFC.

A memorial match, named the Craig Bennett Cup, has been organised by his former club to remember Craig, and also to raise money for the hospice which helped him during his fight.

The game, which will take place on August 31, will be played at Caerbryn football field at 2.30pm.

It will feature CPD Caerbryn AFC against ‘Benny’s Old Stars’, a team filled with players who shared the pitch with Craig.

All proceeds from the game will go to Ty Bryngwyn Hospice, who provided care for Craig.

A suggested donation of £2 is being asked for to watch the match, however any contribution is being gratefully accepted by the organisers of the match.

A spokesman for Caerbryn AFC said: “Craig had constant loving support from his family, friends and professionals, and had unquestionable 24 hour support and care from his loving wife Maria.

“Benny enjoyed his football and was a mentor for many with enthusiastic team talks and motivational speeches.

“He loved playing for Caerbryn, and was a big fan of Manchester United.

“He will be missed by everybody involved with the club but he will never be forgotten.

“We as a club call upon residents, friends and supporters to try and attend to celebrate his life and in his memory get together and create a fantastic atmosphere and at the same time raise funds to support the care unit.”

Food and drinks will be available at the event, with a BBQ being held and refreshments on offer at the game.

There will also be a gathering after the game at the Badgers Steak House and Grill.

Gates for the game will open at 1pm, an hour and a half ahead of kick off.
