A charity event is making a welcome return to Ammanford next week.

The annual charity wheelbarrow race, otherwise known as Barrow Racers, is a six-mile real life wacky racers bar crawl event where teams of pairs dress up in their best fancy-dress costumes and take it in turns to push each other in a wheelbarrow for the duration of the competition.

The route begins at 12pm from Amman United RFC in Glanaman and stretches down to Ammanford and then eventually return back to the Amman United ground.

Families are welcome to attend with their children if they'd like to get photos with all our fancy dressers before the start.

Everyone is welcome to partake in the event.

To be a contender for the winner's title, you must be dressed in fancy dress and in teams of two.

Larger groups are welcome, but they won't be able to win the title.

Solo riders - feel free to turn up on your own, with or without a barrow. You can still join in the fun but if you don't match the two people to one barrow criteria then you can't win it.

The racers will be making their way down to Ammanford stopping off at the list of pubs in the attached map.

South Wales Guardian:

Each racer must consume a pint in each bar. Failure to do so will forfeit you from the chance of being crowned the winner.

The racers will be collecting in sealed buckets throughout the day so if you'd like to donate, keep your eye out on our route.

If you fancy taking part but don't want to do the full run, come and join in for the way down as that's when we work together fundraising while enjoying ourselves.

The hardest part is only really the way back where the race properly starts.

Event organiser Nick Francis told The Guardian: "This is our 12th year of Barrow Racers, an event which just about used to get double figures in its early years

“At our best, we have broken three figures, and this year we are aiming as high as ever trying to beat our previous record of just over 100 people.

“We really want to see all the local community come and get involved in what for many of us is the event highlight of the year.

“It's an absolute barrow of laughs all day and what I personally love the most about it is how many new people I get to meet that I may never have done without the event.

“We like to let the bars know in advance roughly what numbers to expect so they can make sure they have enough staff on shift to give us fast service and not be overwhelmed with numbers.

“All this plus we are raising money for an absolutely amazing charity who we have been supporting for several years now.

“All the ingredients are there for an amazing and unique day out, so what's to think about. Get down to the Amman on July 6 and have yourself a day to remember.”

Organisers encourage racers do decorate their barrows as much as possible, but they do ask that they're not modified with extra wheels, welded on to bikes, or motorised, as requested by the South Wales Police, respectfully.

The last thing we want is our racers getting a drink driving fine.

Rain or shine the event goes ahead.

Entry is £5 per person, every penny earned from the event going to LATCH, Welsh Children's Cancer Charity.

If you are on Facebook, however, please head to the Barrow Racers page and let organisers know that you are attending.

Nick added: "We like to let the bars know in advance roughly what numbers to expect so they can make sure they have enough staff on shift to give us fast service and not be overwhelmed with numbers."

No pre-sign up necessary, just turn up and pay on the day.
