After years of admiration of horses, Many Tears Animal Rescue founder Sylvia Van Atta wanted to do something to help the plight of so many unwanted and mistreated equines.

Sylvia decided to start up a free program at the centre based in Cefneithin to help anyone who has an interest in horses, own horses or is thinking of owning one.

Sylvia said: “We decided to set up a horse self-healing program with a few rescued equines help after meeting so many people when rehoming dogs that were troubled.

“We hoped this would also help horses as people learnt more about these amazing animals. “The Power of the Horse programme has been a benefit to hundreds of people who are suffering from all sorts of things.

“This could be sleep deprivation, or it could be suicidal thoughts, from those who feel worthless our horses help them to feel strong and useful, for those who have suffered abuse, our horses teach them their self-worth, and the importance of being positive and confident.”

The program gives individuals the chance to participate and start their journey to self-healing.

They learn to trust, build relationships, and communicate skills like leadership and problem solving.

The horses has helped, and continues helping, those needing to heal; including home schooled children, children’s homes, many groups dealing with alcoholics, battered women, those challenged with mental health issues and many others.

Katy Kear, Equine manager at Many Tears, said: “We offer the chance to learn about the horses through discussion and observation.

“There is also round penning, click training and all aspects of horse management.

“We hope that the program will also make anyone wanting to get a horse think carefully and truly understand the commitment they will need to have.

“Hopefully this will save horses from ending up at a market, losing their homes, friends and security as well as falling into the wrong hands.”

Katy also runs different sessions at the rescue centre which is not just about horses but about everyday life.

“I love chatting to the Only Friends and Horses group. We cover everything from day to day life, education, depression and anxiety, there is no topic off limits, said Katy.

“I also run a weekly home education group which provides the young people with a social experience.

“I am very passionate about mental health issues and sometimes it’s difficult where to go for support and people wouldn’t think to go to their local animal centre but I’d love to see more people take advantage of these groups.”
