PENYGROES Community Centre has marked their first birthday by presenting awards to those who make a difference within the community.

The charity was formed as a charity in 2017 to provide groups and facilities for the community.

The group opened the doors at and was set up at Penygroes Park Pavilion in January 2018 and now offer 29 groups and activities that range from toddler mornings to youth clubs, to fitness groups and social groups for the over 50s.

Nine awards were presented to various members of the community at the debut Penygroes Community Awards held on Friday, March 8.

The Teacher/Tutor of the Year award was won by Penygroes Cylch Meithrin’s Sian James and Jenny Davies and the Good Neighbour of the Year award was won by Mrs Andrea Davies.

Penygroes and District Local Cancer Group walked away with the Fundraisers of the Year Award after raising over £56,000 to date for various hospitals and worthy organisations.

The Carer of the Year award was presented to 13-year-old Carys Jones and Volunteers of the Year award was won by by charity Helping Hands who run the Young at Heart group.

The Child of Courage Award was won by Isabel Williams who sadly passed away in December. Isabel’s father Mark collected the award his daughter’s honour and it was announced on the night that the award will now be named the Isabel Williams Child of Courage award.

The Community Award was won by PCSO’s and Llinos Hindley took home the Most Inspirational award.

Mrs Hindley has been a childminder for over 100 local children, has run a mother and toddler group in the village for over 30 years and is described as “everyone’s Mamgu”.

County Councillor David Thomas was the winner of the Special Recognition award after judges receiving several nominations from members of the community.
