Imagine having to leave your home forever. That happened to families of ten houses on Cyfyng Road, Ystalyfera after their gardens suddenly disappeared down the valley following a landslide in February 2017.

Ystalyfera: Mewn Lle Cyfyng, which is being shown on S4C this Sunday, tells the story of those residents, their stresses and anxieties, during a difficult and turbulent year.

It’s a story about man’s struggle with nature and a small community fighting for their homes.

Morganne’s family is one of those who were ordered to leave their home, less than one year after buying a house and moving to Cyfyng Road.

Morganne said: "I wouldn’t want anyone to deal with what we have to deal with. It's horrible.

“What’s frustrating is that everything is out of our hands, we can’t do anything ourselves. We're a family who like to do stuff ourselves, we don’t like to ask for help, so this process has been so depressing.”

Paul Harris had moved from London to rent a house on Cyfyng Road three years ago. He says he’s found something in Ystalyfera that he has never had before.

Paul said: “I love Ystalyfera. I’ve not found it anywhere else but there’s a proper sense of community here.

“When I walk the dogs, everyone says hello. I can chat with people, I’ve met loads of lovely people and I’ve really settled in here. I love it.”

But this phenomenon isn’t something new and landslides have seen tens of people being moved from their homes in the area since the 1960s.

By including archive films from the past 50 years, the film asks to which extent the feeling of confusion and despair caused by the landslide is a sign of a society and lifestyle that has also slipped from the local community's hands since losing the coal mines and the famous Tick-Tock clock factory.

And that’s one of the biggest concerns of the residents of Cyfyng Road and the rest of the village - losing their community, their history and everything else that’s connected with it.

Dewi Hopkins, who is deeply rooted in the Ystalyfera area and brought up his family there, said: "I'm not going to move somewhere outside the area because of family and friends. “There isn’t a lot in Ystalyfera now. People need to think about the future. People need to realise that the place will die, and I don’t want to see that.”
