CONCERNS have been raised about the future of a Garnant development.

The development at Arcade Terrace has been thrown into doubt amidst rumours of a proposed superstore pulling out of the project.

It is believed that One-Stop the chain which had agreed to take up a retail space on site have withdrawn from the development.

Councillor Kevin Madge said: “I have heard rumours that they have pulled out, and I am concerned that it is not going ahead.

“If it is true, then what the future of the two shops is now I do not know. I would be really disappointed if it did not go ahead.

“The developer has put a lot of money into the site, and I hope the development can still be finished because it would be good for the area.”

The plans, which were approved by Carmarthenshire County Council in 2016, gave planning permission for a new retail unit, with four residential apartments above.

It also allowed the refurbishment of a property on Cwmamman Road, which would be turned into a retail unit with accommodation above.

Councillor Madge said the new shop spaces are needed in the community, and hoped the development could still be completed.

He added: “The site would provide space for new businesses in the area, and that space is scarce at the moment.

“If they were finished I think they would be snapped up very quickly, I don’t think it would be long before a business took up the floor space.”

One Stop did not respond when approached for comment.
