A new Co-op store is set to open on site of the former Ammanford police station later this year, it has been revealed.

The new store, located in College Street, represents a £650,000 investment by the community retailer.

Replacing the existing nearby Co-op to provide an “improved shopping experience and to better serve the community”, the new store will offer an in-store bakery and a focus on fresh, healthy foods, meal ideas, award winning wines.

The store is one of plans to open at least 10 new stores this year, and in subsequent years, in Wales.

John Hillman, Acquisition Manager for the Co-op in Wales, said: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to carry out such a significant investment in Ammanford.

“We are proud to be part of the community, and are looking forward to opening a new, purpose-designed, store in order to better serve our members and customers.

“We are investing in our stores, products, prices, colleagues and communities to achieve our ambition of creating a stronger Co-op, and stronger communities.

“Our aim is for our stores to be at the heart of local life, bringing communities together and offering great quality products when and where our members and customers need them.

“We also want customers to know that they can become a co-owner and member of their Co-op. And, that we are also giving back to the community.

“Our members make a difference locally, simply by swiping their membership card when they shop with us they are raising much needed funding for organisations in the area.”

The future of the existing Co-op store is unknown, but colleagues will relocate to the new store.
