A LLANDYBIE café has applied for permission to sell alcohol.

Etto’s Coffee Shop, in High Street, applied for an alcohol licence to Carmarthenshire County Council.

If permission is given, the café will be able to serve alcohol between noon and 10pm from Sunday to Thursday, and from noon until 11pm on Friday and Saturday.

Owner, Jamie Morris said: “The premises is currently run as a coffee shop. We would like to be able to sell alcohol at the premises as we intend to open more in the evening for meals and think this would complement the business.”

The application stated that alcohol would only be served with food and would consist of wine and bottled beer.

Staff would also be fully trained and the CCTV that is already on site would be utilised for safety.

Councillor Dai Thomas, county councillor for Pen-y-Groes, offered his support for the application.

He said: “The applicant lives in my ward and is a highly responsible person. Llandybie as a village would also benefit from a place to drink alcohol sensibly which is not a pub.”

Llandybie Community Council discussed the proposals at a meeting last month.

In their letter to the county council, they offered some variations to the proposal.

Clerk, Stuart Griffith said: “The members expressed their full support for all businesses but were concerned that the coffee shop nature of the business would continue to attract children to the premises and that there may be occasions when groups of children could be in the premises without a responsible adult with alcohol being consumed at a nearby table.

“They recommend that the availability of alcohol be restricted until after 6pm when there is less likelihood of children being present unattended.”

Councillors made a decision on the licence at a meeting of the Licensing Sub Committee on Tuesday.
