A Gwendraeth Valley councillor would like to thank the “wonderful” people of Penygroes, Blaenau and Caerbryn for their support as she steps down ahead of the forthcoming election.

County Councillor Sian Thomas has announced that she is retiring from her role on Carmarthenshire County Council and Llandybie Community Council, which she has been a part of for 18 years.

Within the first few days of being elected, Cllr Thomas insisted that the open shaft in the former Emlyn coal mine was capped and that the old lagoon was fenced off. She fought numerous developers who had fanciful plans for the site, but all she wanted was a safe site for the community.

Cllr Thomas said: “Until I stood 18 years ago, I never realised how friendly and helpful people could be. I am continuously amazed at how I was immediately accepted by the neighbourhood and would like to thank everyone for their trust in me.”

“I ensured the parking bays in Spien were added to the site and that the road and parking system in Bryndedwyddfa were brought up to standard. Bringing things up to standard has been a major job for me.”

As well as brushing up on several safety issues across her ward, Cllr Thomas has also helped improve facilities at the local schools in the community.

“I have made the entrance to Blaenau School safety by widening the pavement and ensured a safer crossing point outside Penygroes School,” added Cllr Thomas, who was a school governor in both schools for 18 years.

“It is also wonderful to hear that some ventures I helped establish are still going strong, and that new ventures are springing up, especially the newly formed Penygroes Community Centre.

“I wish them good luck, and even after retiring will be supporting them with these good causes.”

Although the councillor has been involved in community projects, she also enjoyed helping solve individual problems.

Cllr Thomas said: “You would be amazed at the number and variety of issues that your local Councillor can sort out for you. In almost all cases we can put you in touch with the right person to help.

“Now that I am passing on this job to someone else whom I hope will help the villages of Penygroes, Caerbryn and Blaenau in future.

“Having run into the sea on Boxing Day at Cefn Sidan, to raise money for local charities, no fewer than 19 times, I think it’s time to call it a day.”
