A GLANAMAN woman choked to death on a lamb dinner after swallowing lumps of meat to avoid irritating a toothache.

Bertha Bartlett, aged 55, died as she gulped down her food while eating the meal with her son at her Cwmaman Road home on April 8.

An inquest, held at Llanelli, heard how Mrs Bartlett choked as shifted food in her mouth to avoid chewing on painful fillings following a recent visit to her family dentist.

Police attended the scene and met emergency crews at the family home.

The court heard how paramedics extracted a 19-and-a-half gram piece of meat from Mrs Bartlett's throat, but only after she had already died.

Consultant Pathologist Dr Lesley Murray found vomit in Mrs Bartlett's airways and lungs.

A post mortem examination revealed that Mrs Bartlett had already swallowed two pieces of lamb, but neither showed teeth marks or any other signs of having been chewed.

Carmarthenshire Coroner John Owen recorded a verdict of accidental death.
