Burglars have raided an Ammanford social club in a disciplined and well-planned attack.

The robbers broke into the Manor Road Social Club and targeted gambling machines during the early hours of Friday. They also made off with £230 from behind the bar.

Bottles of wine, beer and spirits were left completely untouched during the raid.

The exact amount of money taken remains a mystery.

"I just do not know how much they got away with, but it was certainly quite a lot of money," said landlord Gerald Jones.

The burglars broke into the building after prising open a window and then headed straight for the gambling machines.

"It certainly looks like they knew exactly what they were coming for," said Mr Jones.

"They went straight for the jackpot machine and smashed the bottom off it so that they could get to the money. It seems to have been a quick in and out job.

"They also took cash from behind the bar, but did not take anything else at all.

"They didn't even leave that much mess - apart from the gambling machine."

Mr Jones said it was likely to take some time before he was able to calculate exactly how much the thieves had stolen.

"It is too early to tell at the moment, but at a guess I would think that they must have got away with quite a bit.

Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that officers are investigating the break-in.

"The thieves entered via a window and stole money from gaming machines inside," said a police spokesman.

Officers appealed for any witnesses to the burglary - or anyone who has any information about the incident - to contact them at Ammanford police Station or call 0845 330 2000.

The Manor Road Social Club was, until recently, known as the British Legion Club.
