DYFED-POWYS Police is urging people of all ages to remain safe while online.

The Force is supporting Safer Internet Day (SID) this month, an event which promotes safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people across the world.

Now in its 12th year, Safer Internet Day 2015 centres on the theme 'Let’s create a better internet together' and offers the opportunity to highlight positive uses of technology and to explore the role we all play in helping to create a better and safer online community.

Detective Sergeant Rob Gravelle of the Cybercrime Unit said: "The Internet is integral to the lives of children of all ages.

"The rise in popularity of social network sites, online gaming and chatting on instant messenger means that more young people than ever are sharing their personal experiences and details with strangers. It is important that you know what your child is doing online.”

There is lots of safety advice available on the police internet site which includes:

*Helping your children to understand that they should never give out personal details to online friend

*Understanding that if your child publishes a picture or video online—anyone can change it or share it.

*If your child receives spam and junk email and texts, reminding them never to believe them, reply to them or use them.

*Helping your child to understand that some people lie online and that therefore it's better to keep online mates online.

*Teaching young people how to block someone online and report them if they feel uncomfortable.
