Betws produced a superb team performance to retain their unbeaten home record as they were severely tested by a big, impressive and uncompromising visiting pack.

Pembroke started strongly and had the homesters in trouble from the outset as they dominated the set-piece play as Betws struggled without a recognised hooker in their pack.

However the Betws pack were immense in their defensive duties to repel numerous attacks with the back-row of Joe Adams, Keith Evans and Gavin Thomas working hard throughout.

The visitors having dominated possession and territory eventually took the lead mid-way through the half when prop James Walters powered over from a five metre lineout with outside half Phil Williams adding the conversion.

Pembroke continued to apply the pressure but were stunned by a typical Betws counter attack when full back Gary Davies from deep inside his own half linked with scrum half Dylan Rees who found flying wing Rhys Williams quickly on his shoulder to out sprint the defence and round under the posts from 40 metres out. Outside half Aled Parry added the simple conversion to level the scores but the homesters soon found themselves back on defensive duties as the visitors again applied the pressure through their pack for the remainder of the half.

The visitors were rewarded a minute before the end of the half when following a series of short range lineouts wing forward Steve Dyed was driven over from another powerful catch and drive. In the second half Betws demonstrated tremendous commitment from the outset with Aled Parry using the wind and slope to peg back the visitors with his kicking at every opportunity. Betws also quickly reduced the deficit with a penalty from Parry after good driving play from the forwards and a storming run by No8 Gavin Thomas. The set-piece of the homesters also improved with new signing Dayton Hughes from Ammanford who was drafted in as hooker, with Joe Adams and second row Neil Jones also stealing some crucial lineout throws to disrupt the visitors.

The hard-working home pack, having been on the back foot throughout, were now turning the tables with a period of pressure which was testing the visiting defence. A series of lineouts enabled Joe Adams to initiate the attacks with powerful running by Gavin Thomas and second row Mark Rowston now forcing the visitors into desperate defence. However the visitors were unable to stop Betws from dramatically snatching the lead when man of the match Keith Evans peeled off a close range ruck to power over in the corner.

Aled Parry added the crucial touchline conversion as the homesters were forced to concede a number of penalties in the final minutes. Betws again incredibly soaked up the pressure to deny the visitors a further score in a great hard-fought game which sees the homesters leapfrog Pembroke into fourth place in league Division 4 West.

This Friday evening Betws have a friendly fixture as they entertain Llandovery.
